Great post! Your summary of the TedTalk made me think why people believe that racism is over. I think before the civil rights movement, we were dealing with overt racism, where Whites would call Blacks derogatory […]

First off, this is a great post, good job! I also agree that the ending was not satisfying, but not because they left their homes. Originally, they were brought there to do labor as slaves for their oppressor’s […]

Hi Cole, To support this claim, I’m thinking about how the Dash article mentioned how Dash wanted to deviate from the typical Hollywood story. Especially in the opening scenes, there are many scenes, such as the […]

Hi Jackeb,
I think you bring up a couple off really interesting points about Mr. Snead in this movie. I appreciate how you identify that he serves many purposes throughout the film. As a viewer, it was really […] -

Hannah this is a great exploration of Iona’s significance in the film. The last scene with Iona and St. Julian riding off together is always dissatisfying to me because it does not fit either of the choices that […]

Ty, I really enjoyed reading your post and I definitely agree with how you’ve applied the “world makers” and “space takers” to Daughters of the Dust! It’s also interesting how you bring up the idea of Daughters b […]

I appreciate the connection you made between the unborn child and Nana. I believe that truly shows the spiritual connection Nana has to the past and future (in combination with her values and traditions).

Maud, I haven’t watched the video so hearing your summary is very interesting. I think it’s a very good point that time is different for black and white people. The unborn child being active throughout the […]

I also think the question you pose is really interesting. However, I was not quite as surprised as you that only three family members (not including Nana) stayed behind. I was actually quite surprised that any of […]

Within Julie Dash’s film, Daughters of the Dust, there is a character that she put in the film’s plot that is detached from the film’s main focus group (the Peazant family). This character is the photographer Mr. […]

While watching the Brittney Cooper’s Ted Talk about time I was intrigued by the usage of the terms “world makers” and “space takers”. It reminded me of the article I read stating how Julie Dash challenge […]

The stylings of the end of the film show some forms of resolution and satisfaction, but I believe ultimately the viewer is left with a feeling that not everything is resolved. We see that characters who formerly […]

Mason, your post title poses an interesting question. In my opinion, the fact that not everyone stays is how this film deviates from the picturesque Hollywood story. I’m not so sure it’s a matter of family […]

Yes, I do believe Iona’s name was purposeful and meshed well with her story arc. It would have felt unsatisfying if she were just to go away with her mother, especially after introducing St. Julian.

In the TedTalk led by Brittany Cooper, she discusses the non-linear aspects of time; it is virtually impossible, she explains, to be post racism (for example), because saying that implies that there was a time […]
